4 Tips To Improve Your Fuel Efficiency

Every time you go to fill up on fuel, it’s likely that the prices have changed.  Be prepared for whatever price is on the sign and get more from your tank each time so you’re making that trip to fill up your tank less often.

Tyre Pressure

Tyre pressure is not only often overlooked when it comes to fuel efficiency, it is often overlooked altogether.

The higher your tyre pressure is, the less fuel you will use.  However, don’t just inflate the tyres to a dangerous level, always look at the recommended pressure for your car.  The idea here is just to make sure you’re not letting your tyre pressure get too low for what your car needs. This varies based on the weight of your car.

Take It Slow

The optimum driving speed is between 55-65 mph, so if possible on long journeys, try and maintain a speed within this range to save on fuel.  One of the worst things you can do for fuel economy is rapid acceleration. The further down your foot goes on the pedal the more fuel gets injected into the cylinders so try to take it steady.

Keep Cool

Fuel efficiency is decreased greatly with the use of your air con and when you have your windows down.  However, we don’t expect you to not open your windows or use the air con in this summer heat we’ve been having.  You won’t need your aircon on as intensely or the windows down all the way if you try and park in the shade when possible or open the windows before you start the engine to let out the hot air.  We have a blog with more tips on how to keep your car cool so you can do as much as possible to keep cool and help your fuel efficiency.  You can also help your fuel efficiency by getting your aircon regassed. The fresh gas will take pressure off the engine.

The Bonnet

Keeping your car engine healthy is essential for a smooth running car and also your fuel efficiency.

Using the correct engine oil will keep your car healthy and therefore improve and maintain fuel efficiency.

Old spark plugs are known to decrease efficiency in your fuel by up to 30%.  Make sure they’re changed when needed.

Keeping on top of this basic maintenance will hopefully keep your tank fuller for longer and save you those journeys to the petrol station quite so often.
