7 Essential Car Maintenance Tips

It’s essential that you always check your car on a regular basis, especially when going on a long journey. There are two ways that you can help reduce your chances of breaking down.

Firstly we would always recommend you check your manufacturer’s advice on servicing. Your service/handbook will tell you when a service is due and exactly what’s needed. Secondly, we would advise checking the following on a regular basis:

Tyres

You should check your tyres every two weeks, this includes checking the pressure and the condition of your tyres. Don’t forget to also check the spare if you have one. It’s important to look out for cuts or wear and make sure your tread is within legal limits.

Toolkit

Usually, every car will come with a toolkit, but if your car has a spare wheel, then at the very least you need to carry a jack and wheel removing tools (plus a locking wheel nut key if appropriate).

Engine oil

People usually check this more often than other areas. Basically, use your dipstick to check oil levels every couple of weeks, and before any long journey, and top up if needed and only do this when the engine is cool. Pop your car back to the garage if you’re topping up more than usual.

Water & Fluids

These should be checked on a weekly basis. The best time to do this is while your engine’s cold. Check your coolant level is between the MIN and MAX marks. This also goes for Brake fluids and Steering fluid as it can affect the running and performance of your vehicle.

Windscreen wipers & Screenwash

Depending on how often you use the car, you should replace your windscreen wipers once a year to prevent smearing. By law, your screen wash system must be working at all times.

Windscreen

Some people ignore to check the windscreen but you should keep an eye out for stone damage and, if you spot any chips, get them repaired as soon as possible as they can grow very fast. The chances of it being repaired are usually pretty high but alternatively, you should get the windscreen replaced.

Lights

Last but not least and probably one of the most important when it comes to safety. Check all your lights, including indicators, reversing lights, brake lights and fog lights.
