The 7 Steps To Cleaning Your Car & Increasing It’s Value

Cleaning your car can be an overwhelming experience. There are so many different products and different methods sometimes it seems easier to take if to a quick car wash. However to look after your car and get the best results, it’s worth doing it yourself. When it comes to selling your car, stats show that a services, clean and well looked after car can increase the selling price by up to 20%. Follow our step by step guide so you can have a perfectly clean car…

1. Wash Your Car

This is the first step and will remove any loose bits of dirt, dust and mud off the car exterior. Always use car shampoo designed for cars and not any old detergent or dish cleaner which has the ability to strip away wax and damage the paint. Rinse the car first to remove larger pieces of dirt before using clean mitts and drying cloths.

2. Prepare The Surface

Once the car is washed you will be able to see any scratches or swirls in your paint. Also feel for any tree sap that may have been too stubborn to be removed the first time. A clay bar can remove stubborn materials from the surface and will restore the smoothness to your paint. To remove any scratches that have gone below the surface you’ll need a compound. Apply this with an applicator pad or polisher and wipe soon after application. A compound paint cleaner sometimes needs multiple applications. If the scratch is deep it will require a paint touch-up to repair it.

3. Polishing

This step is for extra gloss and is an optional step. You can apply it by hand or with a polisher. The conditioning oils will add depth of colour and give more gloss prior to waxing.

4. Apply Wax

Wax adds a layer of protection from UV rays which will prevent the colour of your paint fading. It will also create a barrier between the paint and anything that may land on it. It preserves the high gloss finish. There are two types- polymer and carnauba. Both are equally as good but polymer is slightly more expensive yet easier to apply.

5. Maintain And Protect

After all the hard work you’ve put in washing, polishing and waxing, you can focus on the details of keeping up it’s appearance. A spray detailer and microfibre cloth will do just this. Keep it in your car to quickly remove dust and other small pieces of dirt.

6. Windows

Ensure you use a window cleaner specifically designed for cars as household versions often contain chemicals that can damage a car’s window tint. For the best results, wipe down the window twice to make sure all the cleaner is removed.

7. Wheels

Make sure your product is suited to the type of wheels you have. If you are unsure what type of wheels you have got, go for an acid-free aluminium wheel clear as these are universal for all wheels.
