Cars are getting smarter and more technologically advanced at a fast pace. The cars of the future are actually becoming a reality sooner than we thought. Is all of this clever technology secure though?
From 2014-2016 the number of reported car thefts grew from 70,000 to 85,000. Many experts believe that the rise in this number is because criminals are managing to catch up with the latest car technology features and how to work around features such as keyless entry, immobilisers and car alarms.
Thieves managed to steal cars without keys with the use of relay transmitters. They can also use technology that reads the code sent out by the key when you lock the car.
Here we have put together some tips to make sure your car is kept as safe as possible…
Don’t leave your keys near the front or back door or in the hallway. This makes it easier for access codes to be captured by thieves. Keep them well away from these areas or secure them in a safety box overnight.
If you’re out and about and want to lock your car door but suspect something isn’t right, then lock the doors manually. This will prevent thieves from being able to clone your key.
If you have a valuable car or a vehicle you use for work that may have valuables in during work hours, then invest in a car tracker. This will alert you if someone tries to move it and will also let you see the exact location of the car at all times. This will make it easier and quicker to be recovered by the police too.
If someone has managed to get into your car, they won’t be able to get very far with a steering wheel lock. These won’t 100% protect your car as thieves have a way around everything but however, it will act as a deterrent because thieves will know it will slow the process of taking the car down significantly and give them a higher risk of getting caught.
It seems obvious to not do this but I’m sure we’ve all been guilty of leaving the car keys in the ignition when we try to defrost the car on a cold morning or just pop back in the house to fetch something. This gives thieves a very easy getaway.
We know this can’t always be helped, but when possible park somewhere as secure as possible like in a garage.
Another obvious point, but whenever you leave your car unattended, don’t leave valuables in your car or any personal information. If thieves try to look in your car they won’t see anything desirable to take.
