Safe Driving Tips For Winter

The colder weather is finally coming and us Brits need to prepare ourselves for rain, snow, ice, wind and more.  With this weather, we also need to prepare our cars too!

If your car is in need of an upgrade before winter hits, then we will buy your car.  If it just needs some TLC then below we have some tips on how to stay safe this autumn and winter.

Leaves & Puddles

If you see a big pile of wet leaves on the road are one of those deep puddles that you can’t avoid, try and slow down before you hit them.  It can be hard to judge their depth and the loose wet leaves will act just like ice which could leave you sliding all over the place. Be careful when breaking in those deep, long puddles you see on the motorway, try to slow down naturally instead as breaking harshly could lead you to slip too.

Tyres

You need to make sure they’re in good condition.  If they don’t have a lot of tread left or it is worn down, then visit your garage and get them changed before the cold water hits.  Having worn tyres will lead you to slip in icy or rainy conditions. It is also a legal requirement for the minimum depth of the tread on your tyres to be 1.6 mm across the central ¾ of the tread around the entire circumference of the tyre.

Wiper Blades

It’s awful when you’re driving down the motorway and your wiper blades aren’t cleaning anything out the way.  Check they have no grit or dirt on them and that the rubber is in good condition. Remember if your windscreen is iced over, don’t put your wiper blades on!  You could end up not only needing new blades but also a wiper arm too.

These are the main things to be careful of but we also recommend just being careful when you’re driving.  It’s all down to you to stay focused, and not be distracted by your phone. Plan your route in advance or have the sat-nav ready before you start your journey so you know when you’re going and can fully concentrate on the roads in potentially tough driving conditions.

The main thing is to stay safe!
